About
Who we are
See & Sea Culture Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Asian minority groups. Founded by artists and scholars from Asia, we provide support and resources to minority musicians, scholars, and artists, with bases in California and New Jersey.
Mission
Seeing what nourishes us
Our mission is to empower Asian minority musicians and scholars by supporting and publishing field research and traditional music. We aim to help people appreciate the cultural treasures that nourish our modern society, fostering a deeper understanding of Asia’s diverse heritages.
Through our record label See See Records we document and publish traditional music, and through our concert series we present traditional and experimental music from around the world.
Our name
See Sea 丝丝
In Cantonese, 丝丝 is pronounced “See Sea.” This name reflects our mission and cultural heritage. The sea symbolizes the vast influence of traditional cultures on modern society: rich traditions that often go unseen today. We aim to help people “see” and appreciate these cultural treasures.
In Chinese, 丝竹管弦 (sī zhú guǎn xián) means music, representing traditional instruments. By naming our organization 丝丝, we honor this musical heritage and our commitment to preserving traditional music.
“See Sea” encapsulates both our English and Chinese names, bridging the past and present, and highlighting the cultural traditions that shape our world.
